How to Generate Aadhaar Virtual ID at UIDAI?

In a bid to make Aadhaar Biometric Data more secured, UIDAI has put in place multi-layered privacy protection for Aadhaar Card Holders by launching much-awaited facility of Generation of Aadhaar Virtual ID.

What is Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID)?

Aadhaar Virtual ID is a temporary 16 digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number which can be at the time of authentication. That means Aadhaar holders need not provide Aadhaar number and can quote VID in place of it. The same can be used for authentication at the time of opening of new banks accounts, mobile sim card verification, etc.

Currently, the Aadhaar holders can generate the VID through UIDAI website and can only be used to request an address change in the Aadhaar database. Service Providers will soon incorporate the new codes (APIs) in their systems and then can start accepting VID in place of Aadhaar number.

Government is planning to make the aadhaar VID mandatory for authentication from 1st June 2018.

How to Generate an Aadhaar VID?

UIDAI allows several facilities to the Aadhaar holders. One of these several online facilities enables Aadhaar holders to generate virtual id by entering their Aadhaar number/unique identification number (UID).

How to Generate Virtual ID?

1. Visit the UIDAI official portal at https://uidai.gov.in or https://resident.uidai.gov.in
2. Under Aadhaar Services, click on “Virtual ID (VID) Generator” link
3. Generate / Retrieve VID using your Aadhaar no and OTP

4. Once the OTP is entered and submitted, you will get this message on your screen “Congratulations! Your VID Number Successfully Generated and sent to your registered mobile.”

Please note that 16 Digit Aadhaar VID can only be generated, replaced or revoked by the Aadhaar Card Holder and can be done only via UIDAI Website.
